Moonlighting - By Karen Ellyard

March 2012

I saw this and it really made me think. “Your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your behaviour does”.

Belief does not define you, your behaviour does. How often do we hold up our beliefs or hide behind them? Our beliefs are really just meant to be a heading on who we are and how we act. What is the point of having beliefs if they don’t manifest in our day to day lives and define who we are? Take religions, for example what is the point in saying you are a Christian if you don’t live by the principles of Christ? What is the point in saying you are a Buddhist if you don’t live by the principles of Buddha?

Our beliefs have to be more than something we hang out there in conversation. If we live our lives defined by our beliefs we probably would not have to tell people what they were, they would see that in all we do.

Do I always get this right, no of course not, but I can honestly say I am much faster at being aware when I don’t; and then I address it. We need to get our own house in order before we can help others as I have found people are more interested in what you do than what you say.

When I saw that saying I took stock of what I believe and looked at whether my behaviour reflected that.

If you believe in kindness, are you always kind? If you believe in honesty, are you always honest? If you believe in faith do you live by it or get pushed around by fear? If you believe in love, are you always loving? If you believe in respect, are you always respectful? If I believe in looking for the blessing in disguise do I look for the lesson instead of getting caught up in the drama? If I believe in gratitude am I always grateful? These are just some of the questions I’ve asked myself.

I encourage you to make a list of what you believe in and then see if that reflects how you behave. If not then is it really a belief? One thing I have learnt over the years is that I cannot teach what I don’t truly know and I cannot know what I don’t truly do.

I found doing this a really “get real” moment for me and found it immensely helpful.

I wish you a life filled with great love, joy and beliefs that define you to your highest good.

Love & cheers

Karen

Take a moment to make a list of what you believe is important to you, to live your life by, your beliefs. I encourage you to make a reasonable list and then look at each one and see if it is in fact part of your life on a moment by moment basis. If not then take a long look at that belief and either be prepared to let it go or make it part of who you are.
